Can I use the same armour for HEMA and reenactment?

Sometimes. Authentic riveted mail and plate can serve both, but HEMA and buhurt add safety-certification requirements, while strict reenactment adds authenticity requirements. Check both rulebooks before buying one set for both.

Is butted mail allowed at reenactment events?

Usually not for serious living-history groups, which require riveted construction. It may pass at some LARP or relaxed events. When in doubt, buy riveted.

What armour do I need to start HEMA?

Start with what your club requires — typically a mask/helm, gloves and light protection for sparring. Add mail, gauntlets and plate as you progress to heavier disciplines.
